This year, the rom-com saw a revival. We suffered through despairs fictional and all-too real, and took a few blood curdling victory laps around the horror track, but we're back baby. And thank god, because somewhere between the Kate Hudson reign of the early 2000s and today, we got lost. The fountain of joy was turned off. There's so much true crime, so much sadness. Can the girls get a break? It’s time, at long last, for a little levity. Enter, the best romantic comedies of 2024 and where you can watch them, featuring such familiar faces as Dylan Sprouse, Zac Efron, Blake Lively, and Lucy Hale.
We Live In Time
Who said a rom-com can't be devastating? This romance flick from A24 just landed on Amazon Prime Video and stars Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh as a couple whose love story begins with a car accident and ends with....we'll stop there.
Twisters
The movie of the summer may be marketed as a disaster movie, but as anyone who has seen the original Twister knows, the storms are ripe for romance. Plus, have you seen the chemistry between Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones? We rest our case.
Challengers
More romantic drama than romantic comedy, Challengers stars Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor and stands as one of the most highly-anticipated and celebrated films of the year. The talented trio play young tennis champions who spend their years sharing courts (and beds), leading up to a high-stakes “Challenger” event that brings the trio’s romantic history onto the court.
It Ends With Us
The long-awaited adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s hit novel, It Ends With Us hit theaters this summer. Starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, the film follows a young Bostonian woman named Lily Bloom who falls for a neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid. The pair hit things off hot and heavy, but soon find that their love is not all peaches and cream.
The Fall Guy
A modern adaptation of the popular 1980s television series, The Fall Guy stars Ryan Gosling as stunt double who finds himself entangled in the disappearance of his A-list body double, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The movie also stars Emily Blunt as his ex-girlfriend and the director of the film in question.
The Idea of You
Wattpad reimagined for the screen, that’s The Idea of You. The Idea of You stars Anne Hathaway as a single mother who begins a relationship with the lead singer of a boy band, played by Nicholas Galitzine, after meeting at Coachella—how any good love story begins. The Galitzine character is meant to be a Harry Styles type, if that does anything for ya.
The 4:30 Movie
This underrated film takes place in 1986 and follows three teenagers who spend their weekends sneaking into movies at their local theater. The suits behind the DCOM would've loved this one.
Chosen Family
Chosen Family was directed by Heather Graham, who also stars as a yoga teacher whose life is turned upside down when she meets a divorced father of a 7-year-old girl. For the children of divorce in the chat, this one is healing.
Hot Frosty
This may or may not be the plot of a festive sex dream you had once. Starring Mean Girls alum Lacey Chabert and Schitt's Creek breakout Dustin Milligan, this holiday rom-com follows a woman who brings a snowman to life (in the form of a stud).
Your Monster
For a rom-com (horror edition), try Your Monster. The film follows a shy actress who finds a charming monster in her closet. Again, you had a dream like this once.
Fly Me To The Moon
Scarlett Johannson and Channing Tatum star in this new rom-com that follows a NASA big wig and a marketing executive who fall in love ahead of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
Find Me Falling
This Netflix original stars Harry Connick Jr. as a fading rock star who escapes to Cyprus, where he's met with unexpected visitors (including an old flame).
A Family Affair
A Family Affair stars Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King as a twisted love triangle between a young woman, her mother, and her boss. We were originally supposed to be graced with this film in November of 2023, but it was pushed amid the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Anyone But You
Far and away the most buzzed about rom-com of the year, Anyone But You hit theaters in December 2023, but we're counting it for this list because it truly blew up in 2024. The film stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell as a pair of mismatched former lovers who find themselves at the same destination wedding in Australia, pretending to be a couple (a classic rom-com set up). The film is a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, so it joins the likes of such time-honored rom-coms as 10 Things I Hate About You and She's The Man.
Upgraded
Riverdale alum Camila Mendes stars in this Amazon Prime Video original, which is also a modern adaptation of Cinderella. The film follows a young self-starter in the art industry who, upon being upgraded to first class on an international flight, becomes entangled with the world of the wealthy and influential. Basically, she meets her Prince Charming on a flight to London, thus sparking new fantasies for travelers everywhere.
Música
Another Camila Mendes helmed rom-com from Amazon Prime Video, Música comes from musician and content creator Rudy Mancuso who, playing a version of himself, balances family, career, and love as a driven New Jersey native who falls in love at a fish market.
Lisa Frankenstein
Now onto the other Sprouse brother. Lisa Frankenstein stars Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse and takes place in 1989, following a goth girl who revives a Victorian era corpse and turns him into her boyfriend. The film comes from writer Diablo Cody, who previously penned Juno and Jennifer’s Body, and the Alanis Morrissette musical Jagged Little Pill.
Irish Wish
The latest installment in Lindsay Lohan's two-picture Netflix deal, Irish Wish follows a heartbroken girl forced to attend the destination wedding of the former love of her life (who happens to be marrying her friend). On her way to the ceremony in Ireland, she makes a wish that she finds a love of her own and it which spins out of control à la Freaky Friday.
Beautiful Wedding
More wedding content! As if your social media feed didn’t give you enough. Beautiful Wedding, a sequel to the 2023 film Beautiful Disaster, stars Dylan Sprouse and Virginia Gardner as the film’s two newlyweds who honeymoon in Mexico after their whirlwind wedding in Las Vegas.
Which Brings Me to You
A rom com featuring two of your favorite teenage-era actors, Which Brings Me to You stars Lucy Hale and Nat Wolff as two jaded singles who meet and find love at a mutual friend's wedding. In other words, it's the perfect watch to manifest some romance ahead of 2024’s wedding season.
